Background

The exemplar design was well developed in terms of the overall layout but the Early Years Garden and the P1 Garden in particular required further design consideration to meet the client’s aspirations for a learning environment with challenging play opportunities. Following several workshops with interested stakeholders, the scheme evolved through a number of iterations and incorporated two competition winning pupil designs for floorscape graphics.

Delivery involved close collaboration with the surfacing supplier to ensure that the designs were faithfully replicated during their interpretation. Throughout the process creating an informal environment was key, employing natural, rustic elements and a range of paving finishes. Facilities include large walk-in sand pits, furnished story telling areas, allotments and raised planters to allow pupils to cultivate their own herbs and vegetables.
