Located on the shores of Loch Lomond, and within the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, the hotel complex and its extensive grounds sits within a designed landscape with extensive woodland and views. Following the fire in 2017 that destroyed the Listed historic castle, HLA were appointed as part of a multi-disciplinary team for its refurbishment, and the development of a major extension to the north of the complex.
Site wide masterplanning was required to re-organise car parking, footpaths and vehicular access arrangements, as well as to position and orientate the new wing. The project also included the refurbishment of a disused walled garden for a new recreation space for guests and valet car parking. Proposals were developed and refined through an LVIA identifying key views and visual setting requirements, and a careful plan of tree protection and compensation planting to underpin the new landscape proposals.
HLA also developed a new Land Management Plan for the estate to replace an out of date and unwieldy document produced some years earlier. Working closely with the Hotel Estate Manager and the NPA, we undertook a complete review of the estate’s landscape and ecology to create a simplified document to balance the long-term development and enhancement of the estate’s landscape and biodiversity with its recreational function.
The plan was purposely set out to be a clear, easy to use, working document. It was approved by the NPA and implemented via a formal S75 Agreement attached to the planning consent for the new extension.
