Atlantic Square International Financial Services District

Atlantic Square is a mixed-use development comprising three new buildings in the heart of Glasgow’s International Financial Services District (IFSD). The accommodation extends to 300,000sqft with offices, residential and retail at ground level. Atlantic Square One is soon to become HMRC’s new regional hub whilst Atlantic Square 2 has been developed speculatively.

Hirst Landscape Architects were appointed by JV Partners BAM Properties and Taylor Clarke Properties and worked closely with Cooper Cromar (Chartered Architects), BAM Design and BAM Construction and had responsibility for the design of extensive areas of public realm created across a suspended deck above the basement car park linking the neighbouring streets of York Street and James Watt Street where a Grade A listed warehouse façade was to be retained and integrated within the development.

The Scheme provides permeability whilst ensuring a high degree of security through the incorporation of hostile vehicle mitigation measures devised to be as unobtrusive as possible.  These included a series of raised planters along the heel of the footway.  The main square features a large central island of planting and seating disguising the basement vents.  Paving comprises a matrix of small element silver granite sets with both flame textured and bush hammered finishes, punctuated by highlights of flecks and bands of Porphyry, a material used extensively throughout the district.  Raised planters are clad in polished black granite to complement the dark metal framing utilised across the elevations of all three buildings.  Bespoke benches crafted from monolithic slabs of natural stone are also provided to create an amenity space for the enjoyment of office workers and the general public.  The two completed buildings are scheduled for occupation in early 2022 following fit-out.  We are looking forward to the protective matting and protective screens being removed to reveal the completed scheme.
