Old Dalmarnock Road, Greenspace

HLA were appointed as Lead Consultant to develop a new community greenspace park through a series of environmental improvements and careful interventions to an existing area of under-utilised open space. Located adjacent to the Bridgeton Community Learning Campus (BCLC), the existing open space had been created in 1993 on the site of a former gasworks where it had become worn-out and subject to anti-social behaviour and fly tipping.  An existing area of early mature woodland, planted in the 1980s, had become dense and overgrown, having had no active management since it was first planted.

The new proposals have actively exploited the under-managed woodland resource through the creation of a series of new paths and glades, connecting it positively with the wider open space and with the surrounding public streets.  Selective clearance, crown lifting and new planting have opened-out the woods to greater inter-visibility, introduced new age structure, and improved overall biodiversity across the woodland floor.  Elsewhere, existing paths have been refined, informal play elements and seating introduced, and a large informal junior pump track formed.  A new community growing space and garden area have been created around the BCLC building, re-aligning fencing and pulling back the adjacent overgrowth to improve overall visibility and security.

Completed in December 2022, the site is subject to an extended maintenance programme and due for handover to Glasgow City Council at the end of 2025.
