Background

This project involved a comprehensive streetscape design immediately to the front, and side, of the Scottish Piping Centre in Cowcaddens, to provide a more suitable public realm and setting for this Grade “A” Listed Building.  The existing carriageway was resurfaced and the successful promotion of a one-way Traffic Regulation Order served to release a larger area for wider pedestrian circulation. The biggest issue, an awkward change in level between Cowcaddens Road and McPhater Street, was resolved through the combination of ramps and broad steps, which double as informal seating and create a large, open milling space more appropriate to the scale and function of the building.  Civic Trust Commendation 1998.

Now more than 20 years since it was first implemented, the scheme continues to provide a high quality and distinctive public realm context for The Piping Centre and the various new developments that have sprung up around it in the intervening years.
