Background
Hirst Landscape Architects were commissioned at the inception of this project in 2004 to assist with the Masterplan and to prepare a Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment, ultimately leading to a successful Planning Application. The site straddles the main A82 trunk route to Balloch and Loch Lomond and included greenfield land to the north, designated for commercial, business and roadside services; and brownfield areas to the south, designed for housing as a natural edge of town expansion for Dumbarton. Our role lead to the development of a landscape framework within which future phased development could be implemented.
The development necessitated the creation of a new roundabout on the A82 as well as major infrastructural improvements to the existing local roads network. A substantial attenuation facility also had to be planned within a sensitive part of the Greenbelt close to the River Leven; a Site of Interest for Nature Conservation (SINC) at this location.
