Background
The West of Scotland Cancer Care Centre centralises all North Glasgow Oncology Services from existing sites at the Western Infirmary, Gartnavel General Hospital, Stobhill Hospital and haemato-oncology services from Glasgow Royal Infirmary.
Hirst Landscape Architects worked closely with the Architects, Boswell Mitchell and Johnston on this highly complex landmark building which included three linear accelerators, each surmounted by extensive areas of roof garden to disguise the protective concrete thickening. We were responsible for the detail design of all the external works surrounding the building together with a series of internal courtyards and terrace decks at various levels within the central atrium. A feature of the design was the integration of a public artworks, one based on lighting to animate the buildings main entrance and a sponsored stone water feature within the relatives courtyard.
