Background
Working with Architects, Keppie Design Ltd, HLA developed the external works layout for the project, addressing the various requirements for patient access and arrival and resolving a number of tricky residual interfaces with existing buildings and paths.
The key feature of this project was the provision of a large secure courtyard garden for use by patients and staff. Liaising with The Beatson Cancer Charity, the NHS and user group representatives, HLA developed a domestic, human scale design, to provide free circulation through a series of peaceful spaces with discrete seating. Designed along the theme of a central stream bed with a circulating path crossing at various points, the garden features a range of planting to reflect the different seasons, supplemented with a rich palette of hard materials including boulders, stepping stones, timber and coloured gravel to provide warmth, texture and interest.
