Background

The programme included Broughton High School on the original school site; Holy Rood RC High School set in an arcadian landscape within the Greenbelt in the Conservation Village of Duddingston; Forresters High School and St Augustines RC High School, developed as an American style collegiate campus; Craigroyston High School on a brownfield site; and Tynecastle High School on a tight, contaminated urban site.

From the outset, Hirst Landscape Architects role was as a fully integrated member of the Design Team with responsibility for overall site planning and subsequent detailing including access, circulation, servicing, parking, sports provision, informal play and all ancillary external facilities.  Key design issues included setting finished ground levels to reduce the overall extent of cut and thereafter, the creative re-use of surplus excavated material. We also lead discussions with SportScotland to ensure long-term sports activity and competition requirements could be met, to the benefit of the contract.
